“Adults keep saying we owe it to the young people, to give them hope, but I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house is on fire, because it is,” Greta Thunberg speaking at COP24, Poland, December 2018
“You don’t have to be a grown up to do something, “Lilly Platt of Lilly Plastic Pickup explained. “Children are allowed to help the environment. If they don’t, they won’t have a future. They won’t have anything to go to school for.”
TIME TO ACT IS NOW
The days when we spoke about the climate change are gone.
The hours we spent debating on what to do are over.
The time to walk the talk is here.
Children at Young Life Africa Children’s Home have said enough is enough with the #climatechange talk. They have joined thousand of kids around the globe to say, the future belong to them and they have to act now to safeguard that future. The amazing programs the kids have started are aimed at protecting the environment from almost all threat foreseen.
PLASTIC BOTTLES RECYCLING
So far far the children have recycled and reuse over 5000 plastic bottles within our compound. These include:-
- Building a fence using the plastic bottles that they have collected within the community
- Making artifacts from the bottles like flower vase and earring which sale as part of our income generating program.
The children have planted over 200 trees within our 3 acre compound and are on course to achieve the 300 tree target for this year. In that line, we started #AdoptATreeProgram, where give a chance to people who may want to practically participate in the effort of preventing and stopping #climatechange and yet they might not have the time or the space to do so.
We offer to plant a tree on there behalf and they cover the cost of buying a tree and taking care of it. A child in our children home will adopt it and take care of it. We always update those who have signed-up on the progress of the tree. We have enough space to handle over 6000 trees both in our compound and other areas within our community. Our plan is to scale this program nation wide and eventually to the rest of the Africa continent. You are also welcomed to bring your tree and plant as well.
